The Best Microphones For Dubler 2!

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is whether Dubler 2 works with microphones other than our custom USB microphone, which is included in the Dubler Studio Kit 2 or available for purchase individually.

The answer is YES, but there are numerous factors to consider. In this articles we will look at some of these while also providing some more information about our USB microphone.

Dynamic Microphones vs. Condenser Microphones

When using Dubler 2 with your own microphone you’ll get the best results with dynamic microphones, as opposed to condensers microphones. This is because condenser mics are very sensitive and pick up a lot of information from the environment, including quiet breaths.

Dynamic mics are preferable for our use case as they are more suited to pick up focused signal sound, and consequently pick up less background sound. We’re interested in just the detectable triggers and pitch sounds from your voice so a dynamic mic helps eliminate any other sounds that might interfere with detection.

Even cheap dynamic microphones like a Shure SM57 or Shure SM58 will work perfectly with Dubler. Higher end dynamic microphones like the excellent Sennheiser MD445 are also an option of course!

Setting up your own microphone with Dubler is very easy and all you have to do is go through a short calibration process the first time you open up Dubler 2. You can also calibrate a new microphone whenever you want.

The calibration process is made easy with our Audio Setup Wizard! This tool will open when you first launch Dubler 2 and it will walk you through the process of configuring your audio and calibrating your microphone to the software.

If you need any proof that Dubler 2 works with simple dynamic microphones look no further than Andrew Huang’s Dubler 2 tutorial in which he’s only using an SM57 microphone!

USB Microphones

USB microphones can also be used with Dubler 2, however we again suggest using dynamic USB microphones for the best results.

We encourage Windows users using USB microphones to have a separate audio interface with its own ASIO drivers.

If you do not have an audio interface that comes with it’s own dedicated ASIO drivers, and you’re not specifically using the Dubler USB mic, you’ll need to use ASIO4ALL in order to set your mic as an input and get low latency performance. You can find out how to install and setup ASIO4ALL by clicking here

The Dubler USB Microphone

Our low-latency USB microphone has been custom designed for use with Dubler software. We use a high-end microphone capsule and built-in audio interface. This enables us to fine tune the Dubler software for a known input. This way we can ensure a reliable, accurate and low latency out-of-the-box experience for our users.

The built-in audio interface also allows both Windows and Mac users to use Dubler 2 without the need for an external audio interface.

We are working with a highly respected microphone manufacturer to produce the devices and have selected components that are optimal for our use case. For example, the Dubler microphone has a double shock housing to reduce accidental MIDI triggers resulting from handling noise.

Being USB it’s great for being at home, in the studio or on the road. However, in terms of audio or vocals recording quality, it will definitely not be able to compete with dynamic or condenser microphones!

Here’s an example video of one of our favourite Dubler producers Elmer Abapo using the Dubler microphone to create some fire beats!

Another frequent question we get is whether Dubler 2 works better with our USB microphone or with dynamic microphones?

The short answer is that the Dubler USB mic is auto-calibrated, and so will offer the best performance straight away from the app. Other dynamic microphones paired with an audio interface will offer a very VERY similar experience after calibration, but may occasionally need recalibrating if you adjust the gain on your audio interface at all.
