Distributors like Ditto bridge the gap between your music and the stores that your fans use to stream and download tunes every single day. They handle the technical side of getting your music uploaded correctly and ensure it appears where it should, when it should.
Whether you're a bedroom producer uploading your first track to Spotify or a seasoned artist planning your next album release, one thing is certain: you’re going to need a solid music distribution strategy. And if you want people to hear your music in 2025, digital distribution is essential.
If you’re stuck wondering where to begin, a good starting point is to grasp what music distribution actually is and why teaming up with a trusted music distributor like Ditto Music can make all the difference.
At its core, music distribution is all about getting your music from the studio to listeners all around the world. That includes digital streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and even physical formats like vinyl and CDs.
Despite physical records still maintaining their charm within the industry, online distribution is where it’s at nowadays. If you want to reach the 700+ million people streaming music globally, you’re going to need to work with a digital distributor.
Here are some of the key ways digital distributors support your career:
Delivery of your music
First and foremost, they deliver your music to streaming platforms and download stores. From Spotify and Apple Music to Tidal and smaller, regional stores all around the world, a good music distributor ensures your catalogue is uploaded to every major platform.
Behind the scenes, they’ll format your music’s metadata correctly and meet each specific platform’s technical requirements, so you don’t have to stress about it.
Not only does this let you spend more time in the studio, the vast majority of major music stores don’t actually allow individuals to upload music directly to their platforms, so it’s a necessity to team up with a renowned distribution company.
You get the backing of a trusted name and get out of the tricky admin tasks. Not too bad a deal.
Royalty Collection
In principle, royalties are simple: they’re generated every time someone streams or downloads your tracks. Counting and collecting these earnings from every platform your music is available on, however, is where things can become complicated.
Your music distributor takes care of all the heavy lifting here, collecting your royalties and passing them on to you or your music’s rights holders.
In return, some distros take a chunk of your earnings as payment. Ditto artists keep 100% of their royalties, no matter how many tracks they release. Learn more and save 30% on any Ditto Music plan with code VOCHLEA30.
Promotional Support
Making your music available on stores is only half the battle. You’ll still need to put hard graft in to promote it and get it in people’s ears.
From creating content for Instagram and TikTok to playing live shows and building your community, music promotion is an ongoing task you’re going to need to focus on.
Some distributors, like Ditto, go the extra mile with playlist pitching, music sync licensing opportunities, and marketing campaigns designed to give your releases that extra boost.
They also offer tools to track performance, get registered on official global charts, and optimise your music marketing strategy.
With so many distribution platforms available to choose from in 2025, how do you make sure you choose the right one?
We recommend looking for a distributor that will at the very least:
Send your music to global major music platforms
Support your promotional efforts
Let you keep ownership of your music
